Bespoke Reading Challenge – Did I complete it?

Bespoke Reading Challenge 2018 – Did I complete it?

I read 27 books last year and aimed to read 50 this year – and this year I have read a total of… 27! A new job and a busy social/family life has meant that I have not read as much as I planned for.

Let’s see how I got on in the reading challenge that I set for myself…

Audiobook | Not managed to achieve this one as audiobooks seem more expensive than I thought. I will listen to one at some point, but audiobook subscriptions don’t appeal to me at the moment.

Autiobiography / Memoir | I’m actually surprised I didn’t complete this one – I will definitely rectify this point next year…I hope!

Classics | I set myself a target of five classics – I managed to read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and The Murder on the Orient Express. Next year, I hope to read more, although I won’t specify a number this time.

Feminist Book | One book with feminist themes I read this year is It Only Happens in the Movies by Holly Bourne.

Festive Book | Another failure. Although I’m not too bothered about this one as some books feature Christmas to some degree, for example The Book Thief.

History Book | I read and enjoyed The Shortest History of Germany by James Hawes and I plan to read a lot more nonfiction next year.

Play | Never managed this one either…

Translated Book | Read a selection of short stories (all translated) along with Zafon’s The Labyrinth of the Spirits. Comprehensively completed this one.

Young Adult Fantasy Series | Finished off the Red Queen series!

Books that I will DEFINITELY read in 2018:
Call for the Dead, John le Carre
The Language of Thorns, Leigh Bardugo
War Storm, Victoria Aveyard
The Trial, Franz Kafka
Murder on the Orient Express, Agatha Christie

Books that I HOPE to read in 2018:
The Hate U Give, Angie Thomas
A Necessary Evil, Abir Mukherjee
For Your Eyes Only, Ian Fleming
The Mysterious Affair at Styles, and/or, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Agatha Christie
The Secret History, Donna Tartt

12 / 19
Could do better / Room for improvement

How has everyone fared with their reading challenges this year?

  1. Great job at the challenge! I have done better on my 2018 challenge of 40 books than ever before by reading 54 so far! I had two of the easier semesters that I have had in college, so I took it for granted! I’m excited and a little intimidated by 2019s goal as I am moving, starting full time Uni, and hopefully getting a job! 🙂

    • Well done on reaching your challenge goal! Hopefully you’ll find some time for reading in what is going to be a busy year for you.
I’m hoping my 2019 will see me find a routine which allows me to read a bit more. I think 30 is achievable for me next year!

      • Thank you! I hope yours goes is successful and fun as well! I have found that making time in the early morning helps rather than waiting for the late hours each night. 🙂

    • I’ll be a bit more realistic with my reading goals for 2019 – I think I have accepted that I’ll be reading around 25-30 per year as I balance it out with watching lots of films and some TV shows as well. I quite like the balance.

  2. Boiiii audiobooks don’t have to be expensive!! There’s loads of free ones on YouTube for classics (maybe some agatha Christie ones? Idk). Sure they’re not AMAZING but they get you through quicker. Sign up for a free audible trial. You can 2 extra audiobooks from the trial if you know how. Sign up to a library, they tend to have audiobooks. All the possibilities 😆

    • I thought Audible was around £4/5 a month and you can only read 1 book, thus making me avoid signing up for it.

I might have to have a look for some YT ones.

Will have to check the library – the one near me isn’t the greatest…

      Thanks for the suggestions!! 🙂

      • I said sign up for the FREE TRIAL. You’d only have it for a month (or three months if you have amazon prime) so you can get an audiobook of your choice. Then if you go to cancel your membership, they’ll offer you another credit (and you can cancel after spending that). AND if someone (like me) has any audiobooks you’re interested in, you’re allowed to have one audiobook sent to you. So with one month free trial you can get 3 audiobooks.
