Netflix’s flagship show has sunk. The house of cards have fallen down. The final season of House of Cards ended in disappointing fashion.
The lead actor of the hit TV series, Kevin Spacey, was dumped following the scandal surrounding his private life. It was the right call from an ethical standpoint, but from an entertainment standpoint it was the beginning of the sad end for the successful show.
New characters are part and parcel of the show since its inception in 2013. Season six is no different and new characters include the Shepherd family – owners of an industrial conglomerate that effectively exercise control and influence over the Democrat party. This season, they essentially expect Claire to be their puppet – so where have they been the past five seasons?! What an unfathomable cock-up that was! I can’t even begin to explain how awful the storyline concerning that family was. Diane Lane’s portrayal of the Annette Shepherd character was disastrous – was she meant to be a threat? And if she was Claire’s best friend for years, how come this was the first we’ve EVER heard of her? There are plot holes galore regarding this family and that is just the tip of the iceberg.
The myriad of different ways that the writers have attempted to make this season interesting was laughable. These include (attempting to avoid spoilers here): a cabinet reshuffle aimed at tapping into the pulse of the current political climate, a quite frankly ridiculous last ‘gift’ from Frank Underwood and the…period of inactivity from Claire was just downright stupid. The plot is essential in any form of entertainment, be that a TV show, film or novel – and House of Cards built its reputation on the base of riveting storylines. Season six was a catastrophe in this regard.
Struggling to find a positive from the season…
I didn’t actually know it was the final season until after it ended – which made the ending even worse (if that were possible). If you’re a fan of House of Cards and haven’t watched the new season yet. Please save yourself the agony of watching the new episodes. Remember the show for it’s slickness, intensity and gripping nature. Don’t remember it as a show that outstayed its welcome…much like many politicians nowadays.
