Deadpool 2 ★★★★☆
Humpo Show Rating | 8.1
IMDb Rating | 7.9
Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Julian Dennison, Zazie Beetz, T. J. Miller, Brianna Hildebrand, Jack Kesy, Karan Soni and Leslie Uggams.
Director: David Leitch
Plot Summary: Foul-mouthed mutant mercenary Wade Wilson (AKA. Deadpool), brings together a team of fellow mutant rogues to protect a young boy with supernatural abilities from the brutal, time-traveling cyborg, Cable. (IMDb)

Ryan Reynolds once again produces a hilarious and exhilarating performance as Wade Wilson/Deadpool in this brilliantly funny and kick-ass action film.

The story concerns an unstable young mutant named Russell/Firefist who has been subjected to abuse at an orphanage labelled Mutant Re-education Centre. While working as an X-Men trainee, Wilson/Deadpool kills one of Russell’s abusers but he and Russell end up arrested and restrained with power-suppressing collars. They arrive at Ice Box, an isolated prison for mutant criminals where we see the introduction of Cable – a cybernetic soldier from the future whose family is murdered by an older Russell. He has travelled back in time to kill him before he ever becomes a killer.

Thus begins a frantic film, where Wilson endeavours to be his fiancée Vanessa and to save Russell from a fate as a killer or to be killed at the hands of Cable. There are jokes aplenty, that are combination of: crude, clever, outrageous, silly, witty and a scene that made me cry with laughter.

Comedy is a major part of the film, but there is still heart to the film, the storyline and the characters. The film is well-balanced in terms of all of the aforementioned aspects, the pacing is good and there is never a moment where I am thinking about how long is left – always a good sign of a film.

There are a plethora of modern culture references, and even more quips and jokes about Marvel and DC superhero films. These make for hilarious viewing. There was a surprising cameo role from Brad Pitt as the Vanisher, but even more surprising was Matt Damon as Redneck #2. The additions of these types of cameos fall in line with the film’s tongue-in-cheek vibe.

Deadpool 2 strikes a similar tone as the 2016 blockbuster that broke records and brought in US$783 million at the box office (worldwide). Reynolds is born for the role. The film is a very good sequel, in an age where sequels very rarely make the grade.

  1. I’ve still not seen the first Deadpool film. I’m all for comedy at the forefront of a superhero film, but if it doesn’t have heart then it will lose me. I’m glad that Deadpool 2 finds that balance between both. I really should get round to watching it soon haha.

    • Right at the beginning of the film Deadpool gives the reason for the ensuing story – then at the end we get the “moral of the story moment” that relates to the opening. Really well done!
