Bespoke Reading Challenge 2018

Bespoke Reading Challenge 2018

After last year’s horror show of a performance for my reading challenge, which I totally forgot about! I hope to read 50 books (I managed 27 this year), but with my busy social life, hopefully new job, and some travelling, that may be a bit optimistic!

Audiobook | I have never read/listened to an audiobook before and I have the standard 1 free audiobook on my Amazon account, so I may as well make use of it! Any suggestions?

Autiobiography / Memoir | Last year I read the sensational The Pigeon Tunnel by John le Carre, and that has whetted my appetite for another memoir. I already own Kenneth Williams Diaries, so that may be the one I choose to read first.

Classics | I have set the target of reading 5 classics this year. One of them will be Franz Kafka’s The Trial which I already own. There are so many that I loved like To Kill a Mockingbird, Lord of the Flies, The Sun Also Rises, Treasure Island, and Of Mice and Men, but others like Catcher in the Rye I thoroughly disliked. Dracula, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Frankenstein, Moby Dick, The Portrait of Dorian Gray and Animal Farm are on my wishlist, let me know if you have read them.

Feminist Book | Although I read books that had feminist elements in 2017, I am going to read a book where the chief subject is feminism. A book from Emma Watson’s Our Shared Shelf may be the answer.

Festive Book | Having told myself that I would pick up the beautiful clothbound A Christmas Carol...but didn’t, I am determined to do so for Christmas 2018!

History Book | I love history, and during my final year at university I did my dissertation on the causes of the American Civil War, so I would be interested in reading more about Abraham Lincoln. I don’t read enough nonfiction, so this is an area I want to address.

Play | I intend to read an Arthur Miller play as I loved watching The Crucible on stage a couple of years ago.

Translated Book | Last year I was recommended Erebos by Ursula Poznanski; originally published in Polish and German, this book covers a few genres that I love: Young Adult, Mystery, Thriller and Science Fiction. Or I might read something from Zafon or Marquez.

Young Adult Fantasy Series | Give me your suggestions! I read the Six of Crows duology because of my fellow bloggers last year and I loved it! So hit me with your favourite series, or an upcoming new series! 🙂

Books that I will DEFINITELY read in 2018:
Call for the Dead, John le Carre
The Language of Thorns, Leigh Bardugo
War Storm, Victoria Aveyard
The Trial, Franz Kafka
Murder on the Orient Express, Agatha Christie

Books that I HOPE to read in 2018:
The Hate U Give, Angie Thomas
A Necessary Evil, Abir Mukherjee
For Your Eyes Only, Ian Fleming
The Mysterious Affair at Styles, and/or, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Agatha Christie
The Secret History, Donna Tartt

I hope everyone has a Happy New Year, and all the best for 2018! Happy Reading!

  1. Those five classics on your wishlist are all fantastic! (except for Moby Dick, which I thought was just a bit too slow for me.) I’d love to read The Trial as well. Best of luck with all of these reading challenges!! 🙂

  2. You should definitely read Animal Farm as one of your classics. It’s such an interesting little book. I’ve read the others you mentioned too (except Moby Dick) and they’re all great books. I have many suggestions for possible feminist reads but they’re all long essays like ‘We Should All Be Feminists’ by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. I’m sure you’ll find something for that category though!

Good luck with this challenge 🙂

    • I’ve read 1984, but I feel that I would get on best with Animal Farm. For the feminist type of book I was thinking of something from Mary Bear, or The Power. Thanks for the reccs!

      🙂

  3. Audiobooks are great! I’d recommend any of Carrie Fishers audiobooks or even a Harry Potter one. But if you like Star Wars then try one of the canon audiobooks!
